Labata Fantalle Organization hosts stakeholders consultative meeting on Gadaa Power Transition Festival – Gur’ura
Metahara, Ethiopia, May 9, 2026: Labata Fantalle Organization (LaFO) convened a multi-stakeholder consultative meeting with current Gadaa powerholder members, youth representatives, community elites/elders, and local government representatives from both Fantalle Woreda and Metahara Town Administrations. The meeting focused on reflecting on last year’s Gadaa Power Transition Festival, celebrating key achievements, identifying lessons learned and challenges encountered, and setting the way forward for the upcoming Gadaa power transfer (Gur’ura) from the Michelle Group (Tuuta) to the Halchisa Group. Participants discussed how last year’s festival strengthened indigenous cultural practices, enhanced community pride in sustaining their cultural heritage despite the multifaceted challenges faced by the community, promoted collaboration across all segments of society, and fostered wider stakeholder engagement. The Gadaa leaders and community representatives warmly appreciated and thanked partners who contributed to the success of last year’s festival. Community elites, elders, and Gadaa council leaders pledged to work toward a successful power transfer and called upon stakeholders to make concerted efforts in support of the upcoming event. Adisu Wako, Head of Metahara Town Administration, and Hawas Chercher, Head of Fantalle Woreda Administration, also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the successful celebration of the upcoming Gur’ura festival. The meeting concluded with detailed action points and clear directions to ensure the festival is more peaceful, productive, inclusive, and impactful. Agreed priorities include strengthening partnerships, enhancing youth and women’s participation, improving planning and coordination, and mobilizing resources to address potential logistical challenges.
